Thread or spider vein on leg

What are thread veins?

Thread veins aka "spider veins" are damaged blood vessels that appear visible through the skin. Many do not like their appearance, unfortunately treatment is not available on the NHS.

How can they be treated?

Microsclerotherapy is offered at the Mayfair. This involves several injections to the veins to make them collapse and therefore be less visible. This takes 20-30 minutes to do and doesn't require anaesthetic.

How many treatments are needed?

A course of at least 2-3 sessions of injections are recommended to ensure that the thread veins do not recur, which happens in 20-30% of cases.

Aftercare

Compression bandages or dressings are advised for 7 days to ensure that the injected irritant stays within the veins and works optimally.

There is a risk of infection (thrombophlebitis) and irritation at the injection site. This is treatable. Bruising can occur and self-resolves after 1-2 weeks.
